7 Simple Exercises You Can Do Without a Gym

You do not need an expensive gym membership to get fit. Some of the most effective exercises use nothing but your own body weight — and you can do them in your bedroom, your lawn, or a nearby park. Here are seven simple exercises that build real strength and fitness, with zero equipment required.

Upper body: push-ups and tricep dips

Push-ups work your chest, shoulders, arms, and core all at once. Start on your knees if full push-ups are too hard, and build up to three sets of ten. For triceps, use a sturdy chair: sit on the edge, lower your body slowly, and push back up. Aim for three sets of eight to twelve reps.

Lower body: squats and lunges

Bodyweight squats strengthen your legs and glutes. Keep your back straight, push your hips back, and go as low as comfortable — aim for three sets of fifteen. Lunges target each leg individually and improve balance: step forward, lower until both knees bend at ninety degrees, then push back up. Alternate legs for ten reps each side.

Core: plank and mountain climbers

The plank is the king of core exercises. Hold a straight line from head to heels for thirty seconds, rest, and repeat three times. Mountain climbers add cardio to the mix: from plank position, drive your knees toward your chest quickly for thirty seconds. Your abs will thank you.

Full body: jumping jacks

Finish with jumping jacks — a classic move that raises your heart rate and works your whole body. Do them for one minute between exercises as active rest, or three rounds of fifty as a warm-up. For more beginner fitness ideas, browse our Fitness guides.

Do this routine three times a week, resting a day between sessions. Focus on form over speed, drink plenty of water, and add one rep each week. In a month, you will feel noticeably stronger — and you never set foot in a gym. Pair your workouts with smart eating: read our welcome post to see what Earning Avenue is all about.
